Monday Motivational Message: A Life ON

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had a wonderful weekend and are ready for an even better week. Today we commemorate the life of legacy of civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King. Many people choose to commemorate their life and legacy by doing some type of community service.

I’ll be very honest with you all, I’ve been running a lot lately to the point where I can actually feel the fatigue in my body, but I felt like I HAD to do some type of service today because “it is a day ON, not a day off”. (I have volunteered at some type of food bank three times in the last month, but I still felt that I must have a good answer if someone were to ask me what I did on MLK Day.) Ultimately, I decided that my health was also important and that I would not be of much service to my community, if I didn’t rest.

Instead, I cooked breakfast for my parents and watched a little bit of the MLK Day Service held annually at Ebenezer Baptist Church somewhat of a tradition for us (although we rarely watch the whole thing these days.) In her speech, Dr. and Mrs. King’s youngest daughter, Bernice A. King urged us all to do more than a day ON, but to live a life ON. Watching Rev. King speak reminded me of what I already knew, it does not matter what we do on one day, but what we do with our life. Do we speak up against injustice regularly? Do we call out racism in every form? Do we treat our poorer brothers and sisters humanely? It just does not matter what we do today, but what what we do everyday. A LIFE ON…that is my goal.
