Nothing is Perfect... and that's fine
I recently moved into a new place and I’ve been noticing random things that need to be fixed. I’m the first person to live here and I had this preconceived notion that everything would be perfect. I mean no one else was here to mess it up before me, so the builder would just deliver me a perfect place, right? But what is perfect? A quick Google search yields this definition “the condition, state, or quality of being free or as free as possible from all flaws or defects.”
I’ve found cracks and holes that need to be fixed as well as walls and molding that were not adequately painted. I even noticed a window screen they simply forgot to put back on. I’ve been keeping a list of things to get fixed and it seems like as soon as I knock one thing off I notice three more things that are not how I think they should be. One day my dad told me “they are not going to fix everything, just the big stuff.” That altered my thinking to prioritize what’s really important versus what’s just not how I want it.
Things on Earth are not perfect, and that’s fine. I have a friend, Damaris, who often responds to me by saying “and that’s fine'“. The reason I mention it is I would always think she was going to try to convince me that I should do something or should have another opinion about something, but she would simply respond to my statement with her signature affirming “and that’s fine”. Her response always makes me smile. Yes, it IS fine. Even though it (whatever it is…e.g. life, job, relationship status, finances, weight, health etc.) is not perfect, it’s fine. You might not love every single thing about your current reality, but it is often teaching you something, making you better or it just might temporary.
The next time something is not how you want it instead of getting worked up, or viewing whatever it is negatively by talking about what it is not, simply shrug your shoulders and say “and that’s fine”. Then if it is big enough to worry about, put together an action plan to fix it. If it is akin to a wall needing to be repainted, why worry? Don’t sit there talking about what’s not perfect, focus on what is as perfect as possible, and take steps to make other things perfect for you. Because perfect does not really exist, it’s all in how you look at things.
