This is not normal!

So we’re all entering various days/weeks of social distancing (I think I am right at a month), and I’ve seen a lot of people talk about finding their “new normal”. Some businesses continue to try to operate as if it is “business as usual,” and put pressure on their workforce by expecting the same performance from their employees as if the whole world is working from home for fun instead of out of necessity. There’s nothing wrong with being productive and making the best out of this unprecedented situation, but this is not normal, nor is it routine.

As much as I want everyone to feel on top of the world right now IT IS OK if you don’t. Many of us might find ourselves with new or increased responsibilities as we navigate, working from home with less resources or technology challenges, caring for loved ones in new ways never expected (some of us may have had some family members get sick or you want to help make sure they don’t, so you’re going to the pharmacy and grabbing other essentials for them) and of course even though it should not be last it often comes last, self-care.

In this season (I say “season” because it will not last forever),

Do not:

  • overwork yourself trying to balance everything

  • let your job overwork you or guilt you in to feeling like you’re doing a bad job

  • be hard on yourself because you’re not doing everything flawlessly (no one ever does)

Do:

  • Give yourself grace!

  • Take time for you!

  • Prioritize your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing!

As YettiSays states “[you are] doing the best [you] can right now. I am so proud of [you].”

A word of wisdom…pay attention to how people treat you “in crisis”. It says a lot. Everyone is going through something whether they choose to share it or not and at a time when the world should be rallying behind each other and giving people a little more grace, you might notice some people don’t. Don’t get mad, be grateful God is showing you who people truly are. Like Maya Angelou says “when someone shows you who they are, believe them”.
